  • Consumer dispute coverage
    • Certain expenses incurred as a result of a consumer dispute will be reimbursed for up to $25,000 per occurrence.
  • Cyber protection

Legal Information Service

Claim your inheritance

A customer receives an email stating that they are entitled to a large inheritance.

Before receiving the funds, they must send $4,000 to an overseas bank account to cover legal fees and disbursement costs. The customer is skeptical, but doesn’t want to miss out on the inheritance.

 

What should the customer do?

 

Answer: The customer should call the 24/7 legal information service phone line for legal advice before taking any action that may cause an issue or event to occur.  Note: the service applies to Canadian legal issues only.

 

Identity Theft

I don’t remember signing up for a new credit card…

A customer just started to receive a monthly credit card statement in the mail for a credit card that they did not apply for.

 

What should the customer do?

 

Answer: The customer should call the 24/7 legal information service phone line. A legal representative will guide them throughout the whole process, from restoring your good name and financial standing to future identity theft prevention. The customer will receive information on who to contact, how to deal with financial institutions, and more.

 

Cyber Attack

Took the click bait

A customer inadvertently clicks on a link in a suspicious email and their computer powers off every 15 minutes.

 

What coverage does the customer receive with my Identity?

 

Answer: We will reimburse expenses incurred to repair or replace the computer hardware and software and to restore data.

 

Cyber Extortion

Sounds phishy

A customer receives a phone call from someone claiming to be an employee of their internet service provider. Under the guise of security, they request to access their computer remotely. After the customer grants access, they are locked out of their computer and the person on the phone demands $750 to unlock it.

 

What coverage does the customer receive with my Identity?

 

Answer: The customer should call the 24/7 legal information service phone line before taking any action. With my Identity, we will reimburse the fees for a computer specialist to respond to the cyber extortion, as well as the costs to repair or replace the computer hardware and software, and to restore the data.  Note: my Identity does not cover any extortion or ransom payments made by the customer or anyone else on their behalf.

 

Consumer Dispute

Buyer’s remorse

During a high-pressure, door-to-door sales situation, a customer is duped into signing a contract for a service they do not need or want.

 

What recourse does my Identity provide the customer?

 

Answer: We will provide the customer with legal advice and reimburse legal fees and expenses incurred to pursue or defend a lawsuit to get the customer out of the contract.

 

Consumer Dispute

The contractor vanished…along with money

A customer gave a contractor $5,000 to fix her deck and the contractor vanished without completing the job.

 

What recourse does my Identity provide the customer?

 

Answer: The customer should call the 24/7 legal information service phone line before taking any action.

my Identity covers construction work and/or advice about the design, planning, building or structural change to the residential dwelling or premises with a contract value up to $15,000 if there is a written contract between the customer and the service provider.

If the customer requires full legal representation or advice, referral to a local lawyer can be arranged at a preferred rate. In this case, my Identity would cover up to $25,000 for these legal fees and expenses to pursue or defend covered lawsuits.
